The 8th Wonder of the World
The abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel is the most visited tourist site in Normandy.
This "wonder of the world" was built between the 11th and 16th centuries. This high place of international pilgrimage owes its origin to the bishop of Avranches Saint-Aubert who, in the 8th century, would have seen the Archangel Saint-Michel appear.
The abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel has undergone some alterations over the centuries and this architectural ensemble is thus composed of a pre-Romanesque church, an abbey church, Romanesque and Gothic convent buildings called "la Merveille".
Transformed into a prison of the revolution in the Second Empire, the abbey was entrusted in 1874 to the service of historical monuments.
Since 1969, a monastic community has ensured a permanent spiritual presence. See also: the Historical Museum. Located at the foot of the Abbey, it revives the construction, monastic life and history as a whole of Mont-Saint-Michel.
