La Ranconnière: a few minutes from Arromanches
The Ransomware in 1944
The Rançonnière hotel is located just ten minutes from Arromanches, a true nerve center of the Liberation thanks to its artificial port (Mulberry Harbour).
Our hotel was requisitioned as a base by the German army until its liberation by American soldiers. It also withstood numerous bombings. This allows us to offer you today a residence steeped in history and offering every comfort. An ideal location for exploring the Normandy landing beaches!
Visit the historical sites in Arromanches
- We recommend starting with a visit to a museum, such as the D-Day Museum, which outlines the key events of June 6th. This will give you a clear understanding of the events before you visit the beaches. You can also discover how Mulberry Harbour was built through an impressive model.
- Equally important, Arromanches 360 is a must-see. This circular cinema projects archive images onto a dozen screens all around you, immersing you in the heart of history.
- Continue with the remains of the artificial port which are still visible from the shore, located right next to these two museums.
- Finally, head further east to reach Gold Beach, the site of the British troops' landing.
Must-see sites for your stay exploring the D-Day landing beaches
From our hotel, you have easy access to other unmissable sites on the coast.
For a complete overview, we recommend varying your visits: beaches, museums, bunkers, cemeteries…
Head to Utah Beach for its incredible museum detailing the landing in 10 chronological stages: ideal for understanding everything about this great day.
Don't miss Omaha Beach and its 7-hectare American Cemetery. You'll also find other museums there, including the Overlord Museum, which houses more than 40 vehicles (including tanks and cannons).
Between these two beaches, stop at Pointe du Hoc. This highly strategic location protected Omaha and Utah beaches and therefore absolutely had to be captured. The bunkers there were heavily bombed, but their remains are still clearly visible today.
Juno Beach, captured by Canadian and British forces, was the most significant breakthrough despite heavy losses.
Finally, Sword Beach is the only beach where French soldiers landed, including the famous No. 4 Commando. It's also the only place where a museum is dedicated to them. Don't forget Pegasus Bridge, the first bridge to be liberated, and the Atlantic Wall Museum, built in a bunker.
Great idea : visit the beaches aboard a small plane! The flight is quite affordable and offers a new perspective on the coastline.
